Proverbs 25:16 (NIV) “If you find honey, eat just enough- too much of it, and you will vomit.”
Is there such a thing as too much of a good thing? Can pleasures be over indulged to the point that they are no longer enjoyed?
Many times, in our lives, we find something good and we tend to overdo it. It could be food, it could be watching sports, and it could even be exercise. Now don’t get me wrong we need to eat, we should enjoy leisure activities, and we of course should exercise. The problem occurs when we start doing things in excess and we allow these things to consume our lives or our time. It takes self-control not to over-do something – even a good thing. God created so many good things for us to enjoy, but they are not to be over-done. What are some things that are good in small amounts, but bad in really large amounts? How is chocolate good in small amounts, but bad in large amounts? What about television? Can even sleep be over-done?
Proverbs 25:16 – speaks of how too much of a good thing brings a negative outcome. Honey is good! I love honey, but too much and it is not good anymore. The proverb teaches us that even in the good things of life there is a need for moderation. Vacations are great, but a perpetual vacation would eventually become a drag.
God’s word speaks of enjoying life. God’s word challenges us to never be bored with life. We are instructed to find fulfilment in our labours and joy in our pleasures. Balance is the key.
God expects us to live a balanced life. As the Apostle Paul told us that everything should be done in moderation. What this means is to keep our lives balanced. If we’re workaholics then usually our family life suffers. If we spend all our time in recreational activities then our other responsibilities suffer. Even spiritual matter count in this. As the old saying goes “He’s so spiritually minded that he’s no earthly good.” If there is anything in our lives that should border on excess it is spiritual things. But as we are living our spiritual lives we need to make sure that we are still taking care of our earthly responsibilities. So you see it all comes down to living a balanced life.
I encourage each of us today to examine our lives to see if we are living a balanced life. Are you keeping your work, your family, your exercise, and all the other activities of life in a proper balance? Ask God to help you to find that proper balance. He will show you how to keep everything in order and keep your life from spinning out of control.
God wants us to be fulfilled in our work and to laugh in our play. God wants us to live with anticipation and expectation not dread. Variety, steps of faith, travelling into the unknown are each aspects of walking with God. It is never boring and never a drag to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit as He guides us into the next challenge in life. You will find true and everlasting fulfilment in your personal relationship with God.
