Words and Music by Ray Boltz and Steve Millikan
One by one Jesse’s sons
Stood before the prophet
Their father knew a king
Would soon be found
And each one passed
Except the last
No one thought to call him
Surely he would never
Wear a crown
But when others see a shepherd boy
God may see a king
Even though your life seems filled
With ordinary things
In just a moment He can touch you
And everything will change
When others see a shepherd boy
God may see a king
One by one problems come
And dreams get shattered
And sometimes it’s hard
But things like chance
They don’t really matter
Our Father holds tomorrow
In His hands
Well it wasn’t the oldest
It wasn’t the strongest
Chosen on that day
And yet the giants fell
And nations trembled
When they stood in his way

“Shepherd Boy” -What a great song! It is one of my favourite songs because it says so much about how God works. Those whom God chooses, He equips! You may not be the strongest or the fastest; you may not be the most intelligent or the most articulate. But it doesn’t matter because God looks at our hearts… He sees what’s inside us. You are special and He has a purpose for your life!
People may look at you as a no one, a pauper, a little unknown Christian, a labourer, a poor farmer, and it may all be true, this is part of the training ground for being what the lord has called you to be, faithful in the little things first, than one day later, The lord promotes you.
Would it surprise you to learn that more has been written about David than any other biblical character? Abraham has some fourteen chapters dedicated to his life, and so does Joseph, Jacob has eleven. Elijah has ten. But do you have any idea how many are dedicated to David? Sixty six! David also wrote at least 73 of the Psalms.
When others see a shepherd boy, God may see a king.’
There are several lessons to be learnt here but the summary of it all is this. There is a battle to be fought. There are victories to be won and God needs men that are available for Him to use.
David was not a soldier at this time he was anointed. He was actually considered too insignificant. He was only a shepherd to look after the sheep a job given to the least respected members of the community. But “When others see a shepherd-boy, God may see a king!”
1. God Looks At The Heart And Not At Height ! God is not looking for what the world is looking for. He is looking for in inside and not the outside of a person. The Lord is calling the shepherd boys and girls, the farmers, the poor, the X addicts, X felons, X Generation youth, to come in with the holy anointing and power, unknown you may be, but be faithful in your small things, your routine, it is all training for reigning, one day, maybe for some today, the lord is saying who will I send and who will go for Me, and this small army of unknowns are boldly saying, hear am I lord send me. Is that you today?
2. God Often Uses The Least Likeliest ! If you are faithful in small things, God will assign you major tasks. Do not despise humble and small beginnings, if God is in it, the world will one day stand amazed at what God can do out of nothing.
3. The Little Stuff Matters To God: We can also learn from this, there are times when we can say wow, the lord really anointed me and used me mightily and now this no one, a new kid on the block comes around and I have decreased and he has increased, is this not what John the Baptist said? He had his time, he filled his call, and now he must decrease so Christ may increase. If we can learn to decrease in our own eyes and let the Lord be the Lord of our life, we can’t go wrong. It is all about Christ, not you, not me, if this attitude is not in us, or we stray from being humble, we will shame the lords glory, and not be able to enter into our heavenly rest. If we forget Humility the lord will and does over look us, and will call another to take our place.
4. God Blesses Those Who Are Faithful. Do not give up your faith even in hard times. God will remember you someday.
So, do you have some new Giants and mountains in your life that have you filled with fear dismayed, perplexed and shattered? it may be time to stand back, drop what your doing and spend some quality time in the prayer closet and time in the word, be a Mary a while, sit at Jesus feet, let the Martha’s go on like a chicken with their head cut off, and be resentful of your sabbatical devotion, Jesus said, “Mary has chosen the better part”. Maybe you just need a spiritual and mental time out, a time to rest your fearful, and worried thoughts about the hard times ahead and the hard times we live in. Get renewed and get a biblical perspective on your new Giant and mountain, and once you do, rise up, and put on the whole armor of Christ and engage in the battle once again.
That Giant is going down, Today, that mountain of doubt casting into the sea, today, with your renewed faith.
